A parenthesis refers to some words or phrases in a sentence
that are not essential for correct grammer, but that give additional information. This is shown by the use of commas
, brackets
, or even dashes.
"She walked through the door, which had a Yale lock, and closed it behind her." (commas have been used as a parenthesis
).
"He ate bananas - which he loved- with his toast. "(dashes have been used).
"Here is the answer (although not complete) that you wanted." (brackets have been used).
